Royal Gorge, Then and Now
North America's largest XC resort, Royal Gorge offers 6 distinct trail systems featuring 8 different warming huts across 6,000 acres, seamlessly integrated with the Village at Sugar Bowl. From classic striding to XC skating and snowshoeing, Royal Gorge offers a wonderful opportunity to enjoy scenic winter adventures with some of the finest views in the Sierra.
1971 Royal Gorge Ski touring inc was started next to Soda Springs Hotel.
1972 new trails marked and maintained. Trail pass rates increased to $1.
1977 Trail fees were increased to $3. New warming huts added.
1980 Royal Gorge becomes the site of the first US Marathon Series Subaru California Vasa
1981 The California Gold Rush race is born.
1984 New Summit Station Cafe and Bar is opened moving the hub of the resort.
1991 Royal Gorge celebrates it's 20th anniversary. Added the new Sugar Bowl Interconnect Trail.
1997 The first time dogs are allowed on the trails. Sundays only, for $5.
2004 The Wilderness Lodge burns down.
2012 Royal Gorge is purchase by Sugar Bowl resort and operated in partnership with the Truckee-Donner Land Trust.
