History of Royal Gorge


1971

  • Royal Gorge Ski touring Inc was started. The office was located next to the Soda Springs Hotel.

  • Offering ski tour trips starting across I-80 to Lake Lola Montez and Paradise Valley, the bigger tours went to Canada and Yellowstone.

  • Skiing at Royal Gorge, there was a charge of .50 for the use of marked and maintained trails.

  • 4 trails about 10km.

  • Two trail heads one at Van Norden the other at Pahatsi Rd.

  • 4.5 miles of trails marked on the Van Norden side. 6 miles of trails from the Pahatsi trail head to Kidd Lake.

  • On the Kidd Lake loop was the new Royal Gorge Lodge and Cafe. The cafe was open 11:30-3:00 weekends and Holidays. Lessons and rentals were offered. 4 employees.


1972

  • More marked and maintained trails were added now a total of 7.

  • The cost was $1 Children 12 and under free.


1973

  • The first Royal Gorge brochure was printed when the Royal Gorge ski Touring School was set up in Berkeley.

  • 5-7 day ski tours through the Sierras, the Palisades, Mount Whitney, Rock Creek, Mammoth Traverse, and Trans-Sierra trips.

  • Wilderness seminars with meals included.

  • The first Donner Pass Cross Country Race/Tour 10k


1974

  • Introduction of the "Instructional Lodge Program". It includes: lodging, meals, transportation of packs for novice, 12 hours instruction, waxing, touring technique, and winter survival.

  • Rentals now include snowshoes.

  • Events added Full moon tours and special course's in Mountaineering Medicine, Avalanche, and Orienteering.

  • Now Royal Gorge Ski touring mailing address is in Soda Springs.



1975-76

  • Trail fees still $1

  • Royal Gorge is building the ski touring and lodging called the Wilderness Lodge Program.


1977

  • Trail fees $3 half day 1:00 $1.50

  • 2,300 acres 75 miles of trails.

  • New warming huts one at Devil's Outlook, and the other a ski patrol/warming hut at Kidd Lake and Van Norden.

  • Additions to the customer service, snack bars were added to the huts at the trail heads, and sleigh rides add for the transport to the Royal Gorge Lodge.



1978

  • Trail fees are $4

  • Royal Gorge has 107 miles of double tracked trails.

  • A new Royal Gorge Deer Lake Hut, a new track setting cat, a Thiokol,

  • The first California Vasa 45km Race, and a full time ski patrol.


1979

  • Trail fees $5 Kids 8-12 $3.50

  • 206 km of double track trails.

  • Two new parking lots, one at Van Norden and the other at Pahatsi trail head.


1980

  • Trail fees $5.50 Half day $3.50 kids 8-12 $3.50

  • The brochures says "we present 206km of maintained track on 98 km of trail"

  • Site of the first US Marathon Series Subaru California Vasa


1981

  • 10th anniversary Trail fee $6.50 1:30 $4.50 kids 8-12 $4.50

  • 218 km of machine-set-double-track on 108 km of trails.

  • US Marathon Series Subaru California Vase 55km & 27 km Now called the Great American Ski Chase


1982

  • California's #1 Cross Country Ski Area, One of the Largest Track Systems in the US

  • Trail fees $7.50 1:30 $5.50 kids 7-12 $5.50.

  • 12 new trails now 42 trails 225 km of groomed tracks.

  • Lodge trailhead parking lot is expanded and drainage improved. Cafe is added in that area.

  • Widening of trails.

  • The Great American ski Chase Subaru California Vasa.


1983

  • Royal Gorge Lodge Cafe open 7 days new week mid-week programs Monday-Wednesday, Wednesday-Friday.

  • The Great American Ski Chase name change California Gold Rush


1984

  • New Summit Station Cafe and bar, retail rental, restrooms and a large deck.This will move the hub from Old Van Norden Rental Shop (which will continue to exist and serve the trailhead.

  • Trail fee $8.50 afternoon $6.50 twilight 3:30 $4.50

  • 3,600acres 49 trails, 225 km tracks, 155.9 km of trails.

  • New warming hut at Palisdes Peak, and Weisel (a picnic lodge) by Deer Lake.

  • Royal Gorge Lodge and Cafe starting to be call the Wilderness Cafe.

  • A new spa facility with a large hot tub, sauna, and showers.

  • First year using a tiller on the grooming machines


1985

  • 4,600 acres 57 trails, 225km of tracks on 201km of trails.

  • New trail map, 5 new trails New warming hut on East Ridge total of 6,

  • New maintenance building.

  • New Royal Gorge/Sugar Bowl Shuttle bus service for the summit.

  • The skating revolution.


1986

  • 62 Trails 255km 4 new trails.

  • 7 Warming huts, the newest warming hut on Sterling's Canyon, the new connector to Lola's Lookout.

  • Host Junior Olympic Championships

  • The Gold Rush will be the Men's 50km and the Silver Rush will be the Women's 20km National Championship.


1987

  • 67 trails, 280km 6,300 acres.

  • First mention of skating lanes, and snow making.

  • Devil's Peak Track System added.

  • 7 Warming huts, a new one on Devil's Peak Track System.

2004

  • In October the Wilderness Lodge burned down. Wilderness Lodge was a landmark with a rich history. Built as a hunting lodge in 1868 by a railroad engineer, it evolved into a Boy Scout summer camp headquarters in the 1940s. In 1971, a young American with experience as a ski racer and guide in Europe, John Slouber, dreamed up a winter use for it. He made it the centerpiece of his new Royal Gorge Cross Country Ski Resort.
